The Marine Technical Specialist (MTS) will coordinate and participate in a variety of technical tasks associated with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of oceanographic instruments and systems. The MTS will also serve as a seagoing technician on research vessels and participate in field operations and logistics on a periodic basis, with a particular focus on deployment of oceanographic moorings. The candidate must possess strong computer skills for interface to various oceanographic instruments, as well as good mechanical skills. Prior experience with acoustic current meters, acoustic Doppler current profilers, temperature-salinity recorders, tide gauges, and Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) profiling systems, among other oceanographic instruments, is desirable.

The MTS will also participate in data processing and data quality assessment from the sensors and systems used. Prior experience in scientific programming using languages such as Matlab, C++, or Python, and graphical sofware display packages, is highly desirable, as is an interest in learning new data analysis skills. Basic knowledge of web-page design and website maintenance is also desirable. The ideal candidate will participate in both field operations and scientific analysis of the acquired data, and have some prior educational background in Marine Science. Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to lifting above the shoulder, carrying weights, visual requirements of depth perception, ability to see peripherally, ability to bring objects into focus, ability to distinguish basic colors. The candidate must able to hear instructions or alarms. Routine standing, walking, reaching, stooping, and bending are required for this position. Physical duties are subject to change. The candidate must possess excellent communication skills and have the ability to work with diverse groups of people.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A.S. or B.S. degree in a technical, science or related program.

Strong interest and understanding of the marine instrumentation and the oceanographic
environment.

Previous experience in the maintenance and operation oceanographic instrumentation.

Demonstrated experience in the deployment and recovery of oceanographic moorings is
preferred.

Working knowledge and operation of PC based computer applications, including interfacing
with electronic equipment.

Experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems. Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools and electronic test equipment.

Willingness to maintain equipment and work areas in an orderly and professional manner.

Writing, record keeping and documentation skills.

Ability to perform fieldwork in a challenging environment and see difficult tasks through to completion. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

Ability to work independently and professionally in the field and office.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with diverse groups of people.
