The Department of Meteorology at the Pennsylvania State University is seeking to fill a post doctoral researcher position to work on transport uncertainties in atmospheric CO2 flux inversions. The PennState regional inversion system has been developed in the Mid-Continent Intensive project, part of the North American Carbon Program, to quantify Greenhouse Gas (GHG) fluxes at the regional scale. More recently, the system has been used for continental scale inversions over North America and high resolution urban emission quantification.

The successful applicant will work with the PennState regional inversion system coupled to the NASA Carbon Monitoring System CMS-Flux to study and quantify the impact of atmospheric transport errors in inverse flux estimates at continental and global scales. The NASA CMS-Flux system was created to conduct atmospheric inversions utilizing satellite column CO2 (XCO2) observations from current and future satellite missions (GOSAT and OCO-2). The candidate will use the mesoscale atmospheric model WRF coupled to a Lagrangian Dispersion modeling framework to simulate the atmospheric transport of CO2 and develop innovative approaches to quantify transport errors in the inverse solution.

The candidate will join a group led by Prof. Kenneth Davis and engaged in projects to quantify GHG fluxes at continental, regional, and urban scales. The candidate will work in collaboration with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, co-developers of the NASA CMS-Flux system. The initial appointment is for one year with opportunity for renewal for an additional two years contingent on funding and performance.

Interested applicants should submit a CV, a cover letter describing your research interests, and names of three references to Dr. Thomas Lauvaux (tul5 at psu.edu) or Prof. Kenneth Davis (davis at meteo.psu.edu). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Employment will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with Penn State policy HR-99. Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity and the diversity of its workforce.
