The University of Vermont (UVM), one of the oldest universities in America,
seeks an accomplished, inspiring, collaborative leader to serve as Dean of
the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources (RSENR). This is
an exceptional opportunity for an experienced academic leader with the
vision to advance a vital unit within one of the nation’s premier small
public research universities.

The only comprehensive university in the state and Vermont’s land grant
institution, UVM enrolls 13,000 students, including more than 10,000
undergraduates and close to 1500 graduate students, and combines
faculty-student relationships typically found in a liberal arts college
with the scholarship and resources of a major research institution. It is
home to seven undergraduate schools and colleges, an honors college,
graduate college, medical school, and a division of continuing education.
The University has attracted an increasingly distinguished faculty, and has
steadily built its research enterprise, growing sponsored research from
$65M in 1999 to $129M in 2012. The campus spans Burlington’s highest
ridgeline overlooking Lake Champlain, between the Adirondack and Green
mountains, and is surrounded by the small, historical city of Burlington,
perennially voted one of America's best places to live.

UVM has long been nationally recognized for its leadership in environmental
programs and practices, and the RSENR Dean will oversee its signature
academic unit in this field. The School, with strong undergraduate and
graduate programs and research, a newly-renovated, LEED platinum certified
building, access to unmatched physical and natural environments, and a rich
history of interdisciplinary activity, is well positioned to be a key
academic unit in the broad spectrum of environment-related activity across
the University. Enrolling approximately 600 undergraduate students and 130
full- and part-time Master’s and Ph.D. students, RSENR offers eight
undergraduate majors and minors, and doctoral and masters degrees in
Natural Resources with several concentrations. There are 40 full-time
faculty members and 30 research and administrative staff. The School’s
budget is $11.9M. Directors of the Environmental Program, the Gund
Institute for Ecological Economics, the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science
Laboratory on Lake Champlain, and the U.S. Forest Service Northern Research
Station report to the Dean. As RSENR’s chief academic and administrative
officer, the Dean reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice
President.

UVM seeks a Dean with a record of successful academic achievement and
administrative management, as well as experience in institutional planning,
curriculum development, and fiscal oversight. The ideal candidate will
bring a compelling vision for campus-wide and national leadership in
environment, an appreciation for and proven leadership in interdisciplinary
activity, demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively across the
University to promote its collective goals, and the ability and appetite
for engaging in efforts to secure external funding for the activities and
programs of the School. Candidates must share the Rubenstein School
community’s values, perspectives, and vision for a sustainable future, its
commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to ensuring academic
opportunities for students that integrate teaching and community engagement
through service-learning and other forms of experiential learning. They
will also bring the capacity to help focus the energy, skills, and
collective creativity of its faculty, staff and students. An earned
doctorate in a relevant academic discipline and an outstanding record of
teaching and scholarship to qualify for full professor at UVM are required.
