Dean of the College of Science, Louisiana State University

Louisiana State University invites applications for the position of the Dean of the College of Science. The Dean provides ultimate administrative oversight for all aspects of academic life within the college, including strategic planning, fiscal management, personnel development, academic programs, research enterprises and student enrollment. The Dean also has primary responsibilities for external initiatives that include community engagement and development. The Dean reports directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the College.

About the College: The LSU College of Science is committed to developing and maintaining world-class research programs and educating the next generation of international leaders in the sciences. The College is supported by a community of diverse, innovative and well-funded faculty and staff who remain on the cusp of scientific discovery.


The College consists of six departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology & Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, and the Museum of Natural Science. The College includes over 200 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 42 instructors, and 78 administrative support staff. Over 1600 undergraduate and nearly 600 graduate students are pursuing degrees in the College. The College also has more than $28 million in external funding for research. Research facilities available to faculty of the College include The Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD)<http://camd.lsu.edu/> - a synchrotron light source, the Center for Computation and Technology (CCT)<https://www.cct.lsu.edu/> - LSU's high performance computing facility, a new materials science shared instrumentation laboratory complex<http://www.lsu.edu/departments/gold/2012/10/choppin_chemistry.shtml>, and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO)<http://www.ligo-la.caltech.edu/>. About Applicants and Nominees: Applicants and nominees must hold a doctorate in a basic sciences field and qualify for a tenured position at the rank of Professor in the appropriate academic unit within the College of Science. The successful candidate must have proven administrative skills in an academic or professional setting, including having served in a significant leadership role with a proven capability to create collaborative ties with other academic units and the Honors College, with other universities, private industry, and alumni.

*      Cultivate external resources to support the College's mission

*      Lead engagement of the larger community in the initiatives and programs, and advocate on behalf of, the College's constituent units

*      Exhibit strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making abilities to interact effectively with a diverse public

*      Effectively lead in a shared governance environment and engage faculty in determining the goals and mission of the College
