National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA)

    Scientist - Atmospheric Chemistry

  * Based in Wellington, New Zealand
  * Permanent, full-time position

NIWA is New Zealand's leading environmental research institute and key
provider of atmospheric, freshwater and marine research and consultancy
services in New Zealand.NIWA has a strong programme of measurement and
modelling of atmospheric composition and emissions to the atmosphere, in
particular CO2 and non-CO2 greenhouse gases (GHGs) and their isotopic
signatures. This is linked to a wider effort to improve knowledge of
human impacts on the environment both globally and in the South Pacific
region in order to guide and verify national and international
strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas impacts on the climate
system. In support of this effort, NIWA operates a clean-air monitoring
station at Baring Head near Wellington, an upper atmospheric observatory
at Lauder and a fully equipped gas analysis laboratory in Wellington. We
have an opening for an accomplished Researcher with a research degree in
atmospheric physics or chemistry to conduct research on the composition
of, and processes in the troposphere and investigate chemical species in
air, snow and ice with regards to drivers and mitigation of climate
change. The appointee will contribute to analysis of the life cycles of,
and interactions between, GHGs and other atmospheric compounds. The
position supports research and consultancy projects and is expected to
develop collaborations with related groups both within New Zealand and
overseas. The appointee will have experience in measurements of trace
gases, atmospheric compounds and isotopic composition, including data
analysis and interpretation. They will also have experience in working
with tropospheric chemical models and relating output to observations. A
proven publication record is expected. The appointee will also be
expected to actively develop research initiatives and have experience
with planning and carrying out research projects, writing funding
proposals or pursuing consultancy opportunities in related disciplines.
We are seeking a self-motivated and results orientated, conscientious
and well organised individual, with a keen eye for detail. They will
also have exceptional interpersonal skills, be adaptable and be
committed to on-going professional development.A position description,
