The Department of Geography at Central Michigan University invites
applications for a Post-Doctoral Teaching and Research Fellowship in
Geography, with specialization in Geographic Information Science
effective August, 2013. The appointment is for up to 3 years. The
Post-Doctoral Fellow will work closely with regular faculty for
mentoring in teaching and research. Responsibilities for this
appointment will include teaching 2 courses per semester, during the
academic year, and working as a research associate with the Center for
Geographic Information Science at CMU.

This is intended to be a 12-month appointment with duties as follows:
50% teaching, 30% research during the fall/spring academic year and
80% research during the summer. The intention is to encourage and
allow the person to earn additional compensation through external
grants during the appointment.
Successful candidates will have a strong background in Geographic
Information Science with an ability to teach introductory and advanced
courses in GIS, Spatial Statistics, and Cartography; a Ph.D. in
Geography at time of appointment; demonstrated effective communication
skills. Candidates with previous teaching experience and demonstrated
ability securing and completing externally funded research projects
preferred.

The department offers a B.S. and B.A. (major and minor) in Geography
and M.S. in Geographic Information Sciences as well as Geography
minors and majors for teacher education students. CMU has a strong
commitment to undergraduate instruction. Typical class sizes for GISci
courses range from 15-40 students. Geographic and GISci research and
teaching computing facilities are state-of-the-art and include two GIS
teaching labs with industry-standard software and a newly renovated
