[Dart-users] two bugs to watch for

dear dart users,

i want to warn you about two bugs which might have affected you.

1. if you are using the prepbufr and create_obs_seq programs to
create obs sequences from BUFR files, and 1) you updated from the
subversion trunk between april 9, 2008 and june 2, 2008, and 2) you
were using the default input.nml file in the prepbufr/work directory:

the prepbufr input.nml file was unintentionally changed
to allow all record types to be converted into the ascii temporary
intermediate file, not just those assimilated by NCEP. however,
the create_real_obs program was not set to either process or ignore
the additional record types. the symptom is that observations
with unknown record types are mismarked with the same DART
type as the previous observation type when the obs_seq file is
created. if you think this situation applies to any obs_seq files
you have generated, please check out a fresh copy of the
ncep_obs directory from subversion and regen those files.

2. if you have updated to the trunk since monday, june 2, please
update your obs_sequence directory again. there was a bug in the
append_obs_to_seq() routine which would result in deallocating
the space in your observation instead of the intended local variable.

sorry for the inconvenience,
nancy
