Dear Colleagues,

I'd like to take this opportunity to inform you of a special session
at the AGU Fall Meeting on the development and assessment of using
inquiry-based science curriculum in the classroom. Please visit
http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm07/?content=search&show=detail&sessid=406
for more details.

The deadline for abstract submittal is September 6, 2007.

Title:
Promoting Student Inquiry using Real Scientific Data in Science Curriculum

Description:
Interrogating data is the foundation of scientific investigation,
discoveries, and creating new knowledge. It is what differentiates
those who are primarily learners of science from those who are
practitioners. This session will focus on how we convert students into
scientists through creative interrogation of data in homework,
laboratory, computer-based, and classroom investigations.
Contributions to the development of pedagogically useful science
curriculum, with regard to data selection, processing and formatting,
presentation, evaluation, and assessment are solicited for this
session.

Of particular interest are advances in understanding the scaffolding
needed in lesson designs to support use of new analysis tools, dataset
access and manipulation, or data products while retaining the inquiry
element. This process necessitates balancing guided instruction with
open-ended research and requires student involvement in the successful
manipulation, display, and interpretation of real scientific data.
Additionally, contributions on new developments in data distribution
or analysis tools that support wider use of data in the classroom are
welcome. Presenting evidence of the impact of different approaches to
lesson design, data analysis, or data distribution on student learning
is encouraged.

Best Regards,
Anne Huth
