I have to agree with Tom's assessment here. I grew up in NY State with its regents curriculum and am still amazed at how backward the rest of the United States population is relative to earth science knowledge compared to the average kid coming from NY. Having a system like the Regents is far from perfect...but does make a big difference. (It also shows the importance of covering all major subjects even if only part of the knowledge is retained!)

I would very much agree also, that the universities share a disproportionate share of the blame. As a faculty member responsible for Earth Science education  at MN's largest state school preparer of future teachers, I found an utter disrespect for earth science relative to physics or biology from the administrators and many of the faculty despite the equality given to life science, physical science and earth science in the national science education standards. Pre-service teachers were required to take 7 credits of biology, 5 credits of physics while only 2 credits was allocated to earth science. For several years after my departure from that position MSU Mankato refused to hire tenure track faculty for the earth science courses (only) while biology and physics received dedicated discipline specific science educators. Is it any wonder then, that there is a lack of earth science proficiency in teachers in a state with a reasonably strong mining industry?

I think we need to work on the institutions that acccredit teacher certification programs so that such ignorance of the NSES mandate for Earth science education becomes a certification issue for these programs. What do others think? Dean Moosavi
