<td class="attendee-name">Recent studies have
shown a link between warming of the winter
stratosphere, and the reduction of polar
mesospheric cloud (PMC) occurrence in the
summer hemisphere. Many studies have
investigated the role of gravity waves in
facilitating this so-called interhemispheric
connection. Here, we focus on the role of
planetary-scale agents. The 2-day wave is a
strong-amplitude planetary wave in the
summer mesosphere, that can warm the region
sufficiently to reduce PMCs. Limpasuvan et
al. (2000) demonstrated theoretically that
the 2-day wave is connected to the
wintertime stratosphere through the
phenomenon of low-latitude inertial
instability. We present, for the first time,
observation-driven diagnostics and modeling
results that support an interhemispheric
coupling mechanism facilitated by inertial
instability.</td>
