Session Description: Significant progress has been made recently in understanding the coupling of the magnetosphere to the ionosphere-thermosphere system at high latitudes. This session addresses phenomena of in the neutral upper
atmosphere on regional scales caused by the transfer of energy from the magnetosphere. We invite participation in the areas of measurements, analysis, modeling and theory that helps provide insight into the complex, three-dimensional, dynamics of neutral
gas processes associated with the aurora and the magnetic cusp. Features of special interest are auroral neutral jets driven by ion drag, neutral upwelling and elevated density in the magnetic cusp region, and associated ion outflow. Several recent NASA
sounding rocket campaigns seek to understand the response of the high latitude thermosphere to magnetospheric-ionospheric processes. Coordinated rocket-based investigations of neutral gases, plasma and precipitating particles using
<span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">in situ measurements, vapor trail techniques, and ground-based observations have been particularly useful in advancing our understanding of these phenomena.
