<p><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri">The Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Illinois
at Urbana- Champaign seeks applicants for the position of Visiting
Research Scientist. The Department
has one of the leading programs in the United States granting
approximately 350 B.S. degrees, 100 M.S. degrees, and 60 Ph.D. degrees
annually. ECE Illinois has long had an international reputation for

invent and dream.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri">The primary function of this position is to conduct research focused on understanding the structure, energetics, and </span><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri">dynamics
of the Earth’s upper atmosphere by developing forward and inverse models to </span><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri">infer physical properties of the upper atmosphere from remotely sensed data acquired from both ground and space based
platforms.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri">Specific duties and responsibilities include:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11pt"><font face="Calibri">1. </font></span><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:SymbolMT"></span><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri">Develop, test, and validate inverse
methodologies to infer atmospheric state parameters (e.g., </span><span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:11pt">density and composition) from ground- and space-based spectroscopic observations of airglow </span><span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:11pt">emission.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:11pt">2. Develop, test, and validate statistical, physics-based models for the interpretation of the </span><span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:11pt">parameter estimation results
in terms of physical phenomena such as mass transport and </span><span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:11pt">escape, ion-neutral coupling, and non-thermal particle energization.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11pt"><font face="Calibri">3.</font></span><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:SymbolMT"> </span><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri">Create materials for the dissemination
of research through presentations and publications in </span><span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:11pt">peer-reviewed literature.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:11pt">The Visiting
Research Scientist title requires a PhD in electrical and computer
engineering or a related field and experience developing inverse
methodologies to infer physical properties
of non-linear dynamical systems from integrated (line-of-sight)
radiometric data, experience with forward modeling of radiation
transport in optically thick media along with a publication and
presentation record in the field of remote sensing and space science.
Experience with ground- or space-based remotely sensed data acquisition
and analysis, experience with statistical modeling methodologies, such
as Monte Carlo techniques, knowledge of the physics of the terrestrial
upper atmosphere and its chemical and dynamical
coupling to the near- space plasma environment and a minimum of two
years of research experience post Ph.D is preferred.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Calibri;font-size:11pt">The Visiting
Research Scientist position is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic
professional position. The visiting position may become regular at a
future date pending availability of
funding. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the
