<div dir="ltr">Dear Colleagues<br><br>We welcome and encourage submissions to the Fall AGU session SA 019: <br>&quot;Vertical coupling of the lower atmosphere to the thermosphere-ionosphere system&quot;. <br>Abstracts are due on August 5, 2015.<br>We are look forward to seeing you in San Francisco.<br><br>Best regards,<br>Larisa Goncharenko, Astrid Maute, John McCormack, and Ruth Lieberman<br><br>--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br>SA019: Vertical coupling of the lower atmosphere to the thermosphere-ionosphere system<br><br>Session ID#: 9149<br>Session Description:<br>The coupling between the lower atmosphere (0-90 km altitude) and the <br>thermosphere-ionosphere (TI) system is complex, dynamic, and not well <br>understood. During the last extreme solar minimum, the effects of strong, <br>persistent meteorological disturbances were measured in the ionosphere, <br>and possible coupling mechanisms were identified. These mechanisms include <br>changes in the dynamics of the background neutral atmosphere, modification <br>of tides, and subsequent variations in electric field. This session solicits <br>contributions from theoretical, modeling, and observational perspectives <br>that address the following key unresolved questions regarding vertical <br>coupling:<br><br>(1) What are the effects of lower atmospheric forcing on the TI system in <br>the low and mid-latitude regions?<br><br>(2) What are the possible vertical coupling mechanisms in the low and <br>mid-latitude region?<br><br>(3) How can we characterize the variability in the middle atmosphere <br>and TI under various geospace conditions and possible connections using <br>both modeling and observational methods?<br><br></div>
