Arial;color:#333333">Iijima and Potemra published the distribution of field-aligned currents at
northern high-latitudes in 1976. Understanding of the important role of field-aligned currents in magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling has greatly increased over the last 40 years. The recently launched SWARM mission and AMPERE program now can provide detailed
measurements of the structure of field-aligned currents as well as global coverage at high resolution. Because field-aligned currents are the primary means to communicate stresses and energy between the magnetosphere and ionosphere, new advances in theory
and modeling make it possible to probe the dynamics and structures of the magnetosphere from low altitude. Advances in understanding field-aligned currents have also led to improved modeling of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling including current-voltage
relationships, particle precipitation, and ion outflows. Wave-particle interactions can play an important role in the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, including electron pitch angle scattering. Papers discussing observations, modeling, and theories are
welcomed.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
