>From jeffrey.thayer at colorado.edu.

To the CEDAR Community,

The CSSC has implemented the first Grand Challenge (GC) Workshops for the 2014 CEDAR meeting. These are workshops whose topics have broad scientific interest, will last four years, and will be tied to a tutorial lecture in the plenary session each year. Below are details of one of the CSSC-selected GC Workshops called MLT-X, or MLT extended. More formally this GC Workshop addresses: Coupling and Transport Processes from the Upper Mesosphere through the Middle Thermosphere (80-200 km)

For this first year, the workshop will be organized based on science imperatives and establishing science goals that will advance the MLT-X field and establish the direction for the subsequent years. We encourage participation of the broad CEDAR community to present ideas and engage in scientific discourse on advancing our understanding of the MLT-X region. More complete descriptions can be found on the CEDAR 2014 meeting wiki, http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/2014_Workshop:Coupling_and_Transport_Processes, and a website will soon be available to track progress and add content.
The workshop resulted in the formulation of an Observatory for Atmosphere-Space Interaction Studies (OASIS) and two final reports: OASIS-Exploring the Interaction of Earth's Atmosphere with Space and OASIS-Engineering and Technical Supplement. These reports are now available for downloading from the Chicago Workshop website and some copies will be available at the CEDAR workshop.
Colorado Boulder is seeking to fill immediately a postdoctoral research
associate position to investigate the near-Mars space environment within the
context of the Mar-solar wind interaction. The research will involve (1)
modeling of the physical processes at work in the Martian ionosphere and
induced magnetosphere with an emphasis on atmospheric escape, and/or (2)
analysis of the data returned from the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile
EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in planetary and space physics or a
closely related field. Previous experience with programming is desirable.
Interested applicants must be dedicated, highly motivated, and have a good
track record of publication. The postdoctoral position is initially for one
year, and may be extended, contingent upon performance and funding
availability. Applications will be considered beginning June 15, 2014 and
the position will remain open until filled. (3) PhD Student Position due 10 June at IPGP, France (Ionospheric Seismology, Ionosphere).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From Elvira Astafyeva <astafyeva at ipgp.fr> in 5 June SPA Newsletter.

The Department of Planetology and Space Sciences of the Institut de Physique
du Globe de Paris (IPGP, http://www.ipgp.fr) invites applications for a PhD
student position in the field of the ionospheric seismology and the
fundamental ionospheric studies. The 3-year contract will be funded by the
European Research Council (ERC) in the framework of the ERC Starting Grant
project “SIREAL”. The expected starting date is 1 September 2014.
Ionospheric seismology is a modern inter-disciplinary branch of geophysics
that aims study ionospheric response to large earthquakes, tsunamis,
volcanic eruptions and explosions. One of the recent innovational
applications of the ionospheric seismology is the use of ionospheric
measurements in addition to the “traditional” seismological observations for
estimations of parameters of a seismic source. The main subject of the
proposed work will be the development and the improvement of the existing
model of co-seismic ionospheric perturbations, starting from the ground and
till the ionosphere. The final aim is the inversion of parameters of seismic
source from ionospheric observational data. The work will include both
experimental studies and modeling of the ionospheric response to
earthquakes. For additional inquiry do not hesitate to contact Dr. Elvira
Astafyeva (astafyeva at ipgp.fr)

Requested Profile:
* Master Degree in Geophysics or Physics or related field
* Good background knowledge of ionosphere/atmosphere physics, Earth Sciences, seismology
* Excellent abilities in programming
* Good knowledge of English, both oral and written

Applications (CV, a copy of Master Diploma, a short description of Master
work, motivation letter and 2 reference letters) should be sent to Dr.
Elvira Astafyeva (astafyeva @ ipgp.fr). The deadline of application is 10
June 2014.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
