Obituary and Celebration of Life John Joseph Olivero, 82, of Holly Hill, FL, passed away on September 16, 2023. He was born on January 18, 1941, in Yonkers, New York. His family moved to Miami Springs - Hialeah FL in 1947, when he was six years old. After graduating from Hialeah High School in 1959 John attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics in 1962. He received his Master of Science in Physics in 1966 from College of William & Mary, followed by a PhD in Aeronomy in 1971 from the University of Michigan. John worked at NASA-Langley from 1962 until 1970. He also served as a research assistant in the Department of Aerospace Engineering from 1967 until 1970 while pursuing his PhD at the University of Michigan. After completing his PhD, he took a postdoctoral research associate position at the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he also held a position of instructor for physics and astronomy until 1972. In 1972, John accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Atmospheric Physics within the Department of Meteorology at Pennsylvania State University. Concurrently, he was also a staff member of the Ionospheric Research Laboratory/Communication and Space Science Laboratory. He retired from Penn State University as a full Professor in 1994, returning to Florida to serve as the Chair of the Department of Physical Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Daytona Beach, FL. During John?s time as Chair at ERAU, he oversaw the growth of the Department and expansion of its aeronomy and space physics research, leading ultimately to the development of its Engineering Physics PhD program in 2010. John later served as the first Director of ERAU?s Center for Space and Atmospheric Research (CSAR), following its formation in 2014. He retired from Embry-Riddle in 2016 as Professor Emeritus in Physics. John?s research focused on noctilucent clouds and polar mesospheric clouds, and he developed strong research ties with researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. This collaboration led to the finding of the association between NLCs and methane in the mesosphere, which, with the additional finding of the increasing occurrence rates of the NLCs led to the conclusion that methane concentrations were increasing in the upper mesosphere. This had (and still does) important ramifications for climate research. In 1994 John received the NASA ATLAS-3 Award (Third Atmospheric Laboratory forApplications and Science). John also held the position of Visiting Research Associate in the U.S. Global Change Research Program, Washington, DC, in 2001-2002. In 2007, following his research with his colleagues and its relation to the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), John was recognized as one of the contributors to their Nobel Peace Prize. Please see John?s obituary for more about his life, family, and career, and to see and share memories: https://everloved.com/life-of/john-olivero/. He will be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him, for his warmth, kindness, and supportive leadership. A Celebration of Life for John is scheduled for March 20th, as described in this site. Members of the scientific community who knew John are welcome and encouraged to attend. ? The results yield true forecasts of how the solar atmosphere will appear in multiple wavelengths during totality on April 8th, 2024. This work is made possible by the combined efforts of faculty at the partner R1 institutions (with UTA being a minority-serving institution) and realized by the leadership of the student team. In addition to the corona forecasts, the student team has planned a set of in-depth public outreach and education activities occurring the week leading up to the total eclipse. A special livestream broadcast on the day of the eclipse will showcase the forecasts, make comparisons to first-look eclipse data, and interview specialists to discuss the unique experience that is a total solar eclipse. We are proud to share the result of the students? efforts, including the current eclipse corona forecast and details on the public outreach events: https://clasp.engin.umich.edu/solar-eclipse-2024/ An animation of the forecasted corona can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCXiv3aaZpM The student team includes Xianyu Liu, Kathryn Wilbanks, Amy Rewoldt, Weihao Liu, Connor DiMarco, Yu Hong, and Minjing Li. Three faculty members at U-M served as mentors: Ward Manchester, Judit Szente and Dan Welling. -- ======================================= Daniel Welling [he/him] Assistant Professor Director, Center for Space Environment Modeling University of Michigan Dept. of Climate and Space Adjunct, Univ. of Texas at Arlington Physics Climate & Space Research Building Room 1424D ======================================= -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... These data were analyzed in the framework of the System for Rapid Analysis of Ionospheric Dynamics based on GNSS TEC Signals. The System performs the downloading, parsing, and processing of GNSS signal measurements and mapping the geometry of their observations, calculation of slant and vertical TEC and subsequent visualization for selected band-passes of fluctuations with periods shorter than two hours. In routine operation, the System processes 15-30 sec GNSS signal measurements recorded over CONUS from 2700 stations daily. The System is oriented towards rapid access to GNSS sTEC/vTEC data for the assessment and investigation of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) of various nature. Revealed clearly in data are large scale TIDs (LSTIDs), to medium scale TIDs (MSTIDs), and irregularities extending down to ~10s of km and minutes periods. The filter bandpasses for this set of data were selected to especially capture MSTIDs driven from below, by atmospheric acoustic and gravity wave dynamics above meteorology. For this initial release, the System?s archive provides a simple hierarchical interface to high-resolution overview animations of processed vTEC observations, mapped over CONUS for years 2017-2023. The animated visualizations can be previewed online or downloaded directly from the web-archive in an MP4 format. The access to the database is provided through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Data Commons: https://datacommons.erau.edu/datasets/jbx98yscmd/1, and can also be found under DOI 10.17632/jbx98yscmd.1 (https://doi.org/10.17632/jbx98yscmd.1). Please direct any questions on collaborative uses of the data to us, the authors; contact information, acknowledgements, and more are provided through the archive page. Best regards, Pavel Inchin, Jonathan Snively and Matthew Zettergren. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thank you! Dear Heliophysics Colleagues, In a recent town hall, NASA made the suggestion that the Geospace Dynamics Constellation (GDC) be cancelled due to budget shortfalls in coming years. The DYNAMIC mission, that would provide our first systematic day, night and aurora wind measurements in the lower thermosphere, is also likely to be cancelled. DYNAMIC was slated to possibly share a launch with GDC though it is completely independent of GDC. The fact that GDC and DYNAMIC were both products of the last Decadal Survey and the lack of clarity on the fate of DYNAMIC suggests that DYNAMIC may be cancelled as well. These two missions were a top priority of the 2013 Decadal and are crucial to progressing our understanding of the thermosphere and ionosphere and how they are forced by both space weather and the lower atmosphere. This tremendous loss, which may yet be reversed, is due to budget limitations in the President's Budget Request. It is imperative that we as a community appeal to congress to augment NASA's budget in coming years to allow for both GDC and DYNAMIC. We ask each of you to reach out to your representatives and make this urgent request. A sample letter can be found here or in the link below. Please consider making this request of members of the House and Senate Appropriations committees as well. A list of representatives and their contact information can be found here or in the second link below. Congress included funding for DYNAMIC and GDC in previous budgets, so they have supported them in the past. With a strong response to the potential cancellations, congressional leaders can be convinced to ensure these missions are in the final budgets. Thank you for supporting these crucial missions. In its role as representing the entire CEDAR community, the CSSC would also like to issue a recommendation for restoration of funding for these missions. However, before the CSSC can credibly claim? to speak for the CEDAR community as a whole, quantitative evidence is required to show that this is indeed the majority view. We have therefore prepared a _Statement of Support_ for GDC & DYNAMIC, and an online poll soliciting a simple yes/no response to a question that asks whether you support this statement. The URL that links to this poll is here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1s3is5d0Qr4ILIfVbCyXtVeSvD5Ti1MNjxH9aRVeqlME/edit The yes/no question will be found near the bottom of the form. _The CSSC strongly urges all CEDAR community members to complete this online poll as soon as possible_. As soon as sufficient responses are available to provide a statistically significant indication of the community view, the support statement and poll results will be communicated to NASA, and also published (and updated) on the CEDAR web site. Individuals and institutions wishing to express support for these missions to their Congressional representatives will then be able refer to the CEDAR statement as an indication of broad support from within the relevant scientific community.
