Postdoctoral Research Fellow in space physics/atmospheric sciences at
the Birkeland Centre for Space Science (BCSS)

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the
Department of Physics and Technology in space physics/atmospheric
sciences. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years and is
associated with the Birkeland Centre for Space Science (BCSS).

The post doctoral research fellow will be part of a group in BCSS that
explores how energetic particle precipitation can affect the chemistry
and dynamics of the upper atmosphere in the polar region. Energetic
electrons and protons, trapped in the Earth’s magnetic field, can
collide with gases in our atmosphere. The collisions initiate a number
of chemical reactions leading to the production of NOx and HOx gasses,
which in turn can reduce the ozone concentration. Ozone is important in
the energy budget of the atmosphere at these altitudes. Hence changing
the concentration of ozone in the upper stratosphere might also impact
temperature and winds. If, how, and to what extent these changes impose
further impact deeper into the atmosphere remain uncertain.

The applicant must hold a PhD- degree in space physics/atmospheric
sciences, or must have submitted his/her PhD thesis for assessment prior
to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the
PhD degree has been awarded.
