JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in space physics at the Birkeland Centre for Space Science in Bergen, Norway

From: Michael Hesse (michael.hesse at uib.no <http://uib.no/>)

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the Department of Physics and Technology at the University of Bergen in Norway. The position is in space physics with a focus on data-based research of magnetic reconnection. The position is for a period of 3 years and is associated with the Birkeland Centre for Space Science (BCSS) (http://www.uib.no/birkeland/en <http://www.uib.no/birkeland/en>).

JOB DESCRIPTION: The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a research group, which investigates magnetospheric structure and dynamics in response to different solar wind conditions, and in response to the initiation and evolution of activity in the nightside magnetosphere. A key aspect is magnetic reconnection, which is therefore one focal point of the research conducted in this area. Specifically, it is of key importance to understand the conditions for reconnection to occur, and the conditions, which control the reconnection dynamics and rate. Typically, this research requires detailed investigation of the microphysics of collisionless reconnection.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant will hold a PhD or an equivalent degree in space physics, or a related field. Candidates should be highly motivated, and be able to work independently and in structured manner, and to demonstrate good collaboration skills. Demonstrated experience in the analysis of reconnection-related measurements by present-day space missions is particularly important, as well as the ability to evaluate these observations in the context of modern theories and models. Excellent communication skills in both written and oral English are required.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The postdoctoral fellowship is a fixed-term appointment for 3 years. The salary is at pay grade 57 (code 1352 / pay range 24, alternative 1) according to the state salary scale upon appointment, which presently implies gross annual salary of NOK 486100. Promotions are made according to length of service. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered. The University of Bergen offers an inclusive workplace, as well as excellent benefits.

THE APPLICATION: In addition to a CV, applications should include a statement of research interests and motivation, contact information of two professional references (one of which should be the main PhD advisor, a publication list, evidence of completion of the doctoral degree (or thesis submission). Further details regarding application requirements is to be found at: https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/134738/postdoctoral-research-fellow <https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/134738/postdoctoral-research-fellow>
Applications can be considered only if submitted electronically through this site. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2017.

The state labour force shall reflect the diversity of Norwegian society to the greatest extent possible. Age and gender balance among employees is therefore a goal. People with immigrant backgrounds and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply for the position. We encourage women to apply. If multiple applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications, the rules pertaining to moderate gender quotas shall apply.
