Ph.D. student position in Atmospheric Physics at Stockholm University

From: Bodil Karlsson <bodil at misu.su.se>

Dear colleagues,

the Department of Meteorology (MISU) at Stockholm University, Sweden,
invites applicants for a fully funded Ph.D. student position in Atmospheric
Physics. Application deadline is November 20, 2013. Please find complete
information and instructions under http://www.misu.su.se/about-us/vacancies.

Conditions in the Earth's middle atmosphere (altitudes about 10-100 km) are
to a large extent determined by dynamic activity in the lower atmosphere. At
the same time, this region is strongly influenced by radiative processes
driven by the sun. This PhD project aims at a deeper understanding of the
conditions in the middle atmosphere; what is the relative importance of
various dynamical and solar effects? How are they coupled? How do these
effects vary during the year and between the hemispheres? This project
builds on the analysis of satellite data as well as model studies of global
and local processes. You are encouraged to collaborate with an international
network of scientists active in middle atmospheric research.

At the Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (www.misu.su.se),
research and education is conducted in an international environment. The
four main research areas are atmospheric physics, dynamic meteorology,
physical oceanography and chemical meteorology. Around 75 people are working
at the department, of which around 25 are teachers and scientists and 30 are
Ph.D. students. Research in Atmospheric Physics at the department concerns
studies of the stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere, the coupling
between these, as well as the coupling to the climate system as a whole.
These activities build on projects involving satellites, sounding rockets
and lidar, as well as related theoretical and modeling studies.
