Postdoctoral Research Officer - Atmospheric Dynamics
Centre for Space, Atmospheric & Oceanic Science
University of Bath, UK
Salary: Starting from £30,424, rising to £36,298
Closing Date: October 14, 2013

SG-WEX: THE SOUTH GEORGIA WAVE EXPERIMENT

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Officer position
in the atmospheric dynamics group of Professor Nick Mitchell based in
the Centre for Space, Atmospheric & Oceanic Science at the University
of Bath, UK. The post is funded by the Natural Environment Research
Council (NERC). It is a fixed-term three-year contract and is
available from November 1, 2013.

The research will investigate the role of the isolated island of South
Georgia in the South Atlantic as an intense source of gravity waves as
part of the "SG-WEX: South Georgia Wave Experiment" project. It will
study how these gravity waves propagate from the troposphere into the
stratosphere and mesosphere. Data from radiosondes, from satellite
radio-occultation measurements (COSMIC) and from a VHF meteor radar
will be used to determine wave fluxes and their variability. The
Research Officer will join a fieldwork team from Bath and The British
Antarctic Survey to deploy the VHF meteor radar on South Georgia and
will carry out two radiosondes campaigns from the island.

Applicants should hold, or expect to shortly receive, a PhD in
physics, meteorology, engineering or mathematics. Experience of
atmospheric dynamics would be an advantage. Research skills in data
analysis are essential. The work of the Centre is strongly
international and the Research Officer will be expected to take part
in international collaborations and to present their work at
international meetings.
