(1) Nominations for the CEDAR Prize Lecture are due 3 February.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
>From Dave Hysell (dlh37 at cornell.edu).

Nominations for the CEDAR Prize lecture are due Friday February 3 using
the form at http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/Workshop:CEDAR_Prize
(or a separate similar form for CSSC members at the CSSC wiki). The CEDAR
Prize lecture was instituted in 1989 and honors an outstanding science
contribution to CEDAR. The recipient of the award presents an invited
45 minute talk at the annual CEDAR meeting in June. The nomination is
based on a research paper reported in a peer-reviewed publication
within the previous four years.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(2) "The Sun-Earth Connection near Solar Minimum" papers in Solar Physics
are now available.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
>From Barbara Emery (emery at ucar.edu).

The Whole Heliospher Interval (WHI) Topical Issue of the journal Solar
Physics,
"The Sun-Earth Connection near Solar Minimum," is now available. The December
2011 (Volume 274, Nos. 1 - 2) at
http://www.springerlink.com/content/0038-0938/274/
contains 27 articles on the nature of the Sun, heliosphere and geospace near
solar minimum, and comparisons between this and past minima.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(3) Jicamarca International Research Experience Program JIREP 2012 (10
weeks in summer) - Applications due 15 January 2012.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
>From Jorge Chau and Angela Calle (jirep at jro.igp.gob.pe).

The students will work with staff engineers and scientists on projects
related to ongoing research or instrumentation development programs.
Research may be conducted in neutral atmospheric and ionospheric science
as well as radar/radio instrumentation and software development. Given its
location, frequency of operation, and array system, most of the Jicamarca
Radio Observatory's research capabilities are unique. Besides the unique
research capabilities where students are welcomed to propose and run their
own experiments, Jicamarca offers a good opportunity to get
hands-on-experience on different aspects of radar systems, from changing
the antenna connections, improving RF components of the system, to develop
sophisticated acquisition and processing programs. A side benefit of the
program is that students will get to know Peru, heir to ancient cultures
and rich colonial tradition.

This program is offered to junior/senior undergraduate and/or first and
second year graduate students and will cover the travel expenses (to and
from Lima) as well as a reasonable stipend. Given that the Observatory is
located outside Lima city, transportation will be provided.

Application and recommendation forms are available at
http://jro.igp.gob.pe/jirep/

* Application deadline: January 15th, 2012
* Decision: February 15th, 2012
* Starting date: Anytime between May 10th and June 30th
* Duration: 10 weeks

(4) July 14-22, 39th COSPAR assembly, Mysore, India - abstracts due 10
February.

(a)Session C1.1: Recent Advances in Equatorial, Low- and Mid-Latitude
Mesosphere,Thermosphere and Ionosphere Studies.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
>From Alok Taori <taori at narl.gov.in>.

Papers are invited for a session on the recent advances in the field of
equatorial, low- and mid-latitude mesosphere, thermosphere and ionosphere
from observational (ground-based and space-borne), theoretical and
simulation studies. Contributions related to all aspects in these areas
are welcome. Topics include: MLT region; response of the
thermosphere-ionosphere system to forcing from above and below; coupling
between high-, mid- and low latitude regions; magnetosphere-ionosphere
coupling; data-assimilation and tomography; space weather events; long and
short term variability in mesosphere, thermosphere and ionosphere;
latitudinal and/or longitudinal variability; ionospheric irregularities
and scintillations. The session will include both solicited and
contributed (oral and poster) papers.

Session MSO: P. R. Fagundes; DO: Alok Taori.

(4) July 14-22, 39th COSPAR assembly, Mysore, India - abstracts due 10
February.
See also http://www.cospar-assembly.org.

(b) Session C2.2: Whole Atmosphere Wave Coupling and Interaction Processes.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
>From Jens Oberheide <joberhe at clemson.edu>.

This symposium focuses on troposphere to ionosphere multi-scale wave
coupling processes. New measurements, modeling results and analysis
techniques are encouraged, including electrodynamic and chemical studies.
We also invite contributions from CAWSES-II/TG4 ("What is the geospace
response to variable inputs from the lower atmosphere?") activities. In
particular, studies in the following areas are most welcome.

*Global structure, variability and sources of GW, PW and tides.
*Secondary wave generation, propagation and their effects on the neutral
and ionized atmosphere.
*Neutral-ionosphere coupling processes.
*Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere response to lower and middle
atmosphere variability.
*Polar dynamics and coupling to lower latitudes.

The 2012 COSPAR meeting will be held in Mysore, India, 14-22 July 2012.
Abstract deadline is 10 February 2012. For further information, please
email the session convener, Jens Oberheide, Clemson University,
joberhe at clemson.edu.

(5) 20-21 March, Training Research and Application Network to Support the
Mitigation of Ionospheric Threats (TRANSMIT) Workshop in Nottingham, UK -
abstracts due 31 January.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
>From Philip Wilkinson <P.Wilkinson at bom.gov.au> and Marcio H O Aquino.

TRANSMIT (Training Research and Application Network to Support the
Mitigation of Ionospheric Threats)
is an FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network focused on the study of
ionospheric phenomena and their effects on systems embedded in our daily
life.
The first TRANSMIT Workshop will be held at Nottingham (UK) the next
20-21 March and the deadline to submit contributions has been extended to
the end of January (31st). Please visit the web page
http://www.transmit-ionosphere.net/ for more information.
