Second Announcement

Workshop on C/NOFS Results and Equatorial Dynamics
May 18-20, 2010

The C/NOFS Science Workshop will be held May 18 - 20, 2010 at the Beaver Run Conference Center in Breckenridge, Colorado. Primary objective of this meeting is to address questions related to the dynamics of the equatorial ionosphere, how it is driven from above by the solar wind and from below by the troposphere and mesosphere. This unusually quiet solar minimum has provided a unique opportunity to study the equatorial ionosphere. Results from the Communication/Navigation Outage Forecasting System (C/NOFS) satellite, as well as other ground and space instruments such as RAIDS, will be presented.

Agenda: Scientific sessions will bring together the C/NOFS PIs and Guest Investigators, data analysts, theoreticians, and equatorial ionospheric physicists in a workshop setting that includes both invited and contributed talks and discussions. Presentations will highlight critical new insights into our current understanding of the dynamics of the Ionosphere-Thermosphere system. Workshop goal is to identify the most important research challenges and develop strategies to address them. Session topics are:

Tuesday AM Topic 1: Space weather applications: models, validation, forecasts and
                                    specification

Tuesday PM Topic 2: Solar wind effects, penetration electric fields, overshielding

Wednesday AM Topic 3: Neutral atmosphere, satellite drag, planetary waves, tides,
stratospheric warmings and their influence on the ionosphere, RAIDS
observations

Wednesday PM Topic 4: Plasma physics, waves, scintillation, irregularity formation
and evolution

Thursday AM Topic 5: Instruments and campaigns

Workshop summary: review of the challenges and strategies

Call for Abstracts: If you wish to present your research at the meeting, please send an abstract and selected session topic from this conference list to Louise Gentile at AFRL by April 16, 2010, the second anniversary of the C/NOFS launch.

Expenses: Information about the Conference Fee, Hotel Reservations, and Airport Transportation will be provided in the Third Announcement. We are still finalizing arrangements. Accommodations at Beaver Run will be Deluxe Studio rooms which feature a queen bed, sleeper sofa, and mini-kitchen for $ 100.00 per night plus tax. Conference fee is expected to be < $ 250.00 and will include continental breakfasts, refreshments at breaks, and the conference dinner on Wednesday night. If financial constraints may interfere with your participation, contact Odile de La Beaujardière at 781-377-2760. If you have any dietary restrictions or special requests contact Louise Gentile at 781-377-7002.
